Welcome to Miao Fa Buddhist Temple
“Miao Fa” means “Supreme Ultimate Dhamma” in Mandarin Chinese.
Miao Fa is a Mahayana/Chan Buddhist temple founded in 1998 by Venerable Master
Tsien Tien. Our Mother Temple, also called Miao Fa, is in Tainan, Taiwan.
Our Abbott is Chuan Wei Fa Su and The Venerable Fa Thai is in charge of our
English language services. We are open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30
Our building has an interesting history. It was originally Third Church of
Christian Science, designed by architect William Grey Purcell and built in 1926.
The building was extensively remodeled to conform to traditional Chinese
Buddhist temple standards after we purchased it. It was and is a Portland
Even though we are Mahayana Chinese we consider ourselves international in
scope. People from all ethnic backgrounds, not only Chinese, come here to
learn about Buddhism. And our teachings are not exclusively Mahayana; we
also have Theravada (Vipassana) classes.
Every Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 our Chinese congregation chants
different Mahayana sutras, such as “The Great Compassion,” along with a
Dhamma talk. A vegetarian lunch is served afterwards. Even if you
don’t speak Chinese the prayer books come with English translations that you
can follow. Our Chinese congregation is happy to help you join in the
chanting. At other times of the year we celebrate different Buddhist
holidays, plus full moon and new moon days. There is a schedule board in
the “Happy Buddha” hall that has information about our events during the
year. You can also view our calendar of events on the Chinese language
pages of this website.
We also have Theravada practice, with short meditation and a Dhamma talk, in
English, on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00.
Miao Fa Temple offers many opportunities for personal growth via
volunteering and charitable giving. You are warmly invited to join us in
learning and practicing the Dhamma. Amitofo!
